Our Basic Computer course begins with fundamental
skills such as turning on the computer, logging onto the
Algoma District School Board Network and using the mouse
and keyboard. Students then learn to "get around"
in the Windows environment performing tasks such as recognizing
different parts of the computer "desktop", opening
and closing programs, using the task bar, minimizing, maximizing,
resizing and moving individual program windows.
The next few weeks of this eight week course
are spent using the Internet to search for web sites, locate
images, translate text into different languages and look
up other information such as online maps, telephone directories
and consumer product reviews. Students will also use the
web to locate corporate, government and personal web sites
used to perform job searches and plan vacations.
By this time, most students feel more comfortable
using computers and are ready to practice sending and receiving
e-mails, use e-mail address books and send attachments such
as images. Relevant topics such as computer viruses, spyware,
adware and what to look for if you intend to buy or upgrade
a computer are also discussed at this time.
The Basic Computer course wraps up with an
introduction to word processing using Microsoft Word. Students
learn to open and save files, change the style, size and
colour of fonts, bold, italics and underline text, indent,
add bullets or automatically number lists. Students also
learn useful skills such as adding pictures and copying
and pasting information from other sources before printing
out their projects.
